A World FIRST - QUAD PARAGLIDER OFF MYSTIC -January 2002
Friday 4th January, 2002 was a memorable day for Quadraplegic Phil Tracey, Chairman of Wheel Chair Sports Victoria. Around 11am, Phil who is nearly 50, took flight off Mystic near Bright, in a specially designed wheelchair for paragliding. The chair was designed by Ted Jenkins of Alpine Paragliding, Bright who engineered the design based on a chair bought out by a paraplegic competitor in the world championship three years ago. Funding for building the chair was initiated by the Bright Adult Education Centre in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Rec. in Wangaratta.
The flight itself was made possible through the support of Wheelchair Sports, Victoria and the Able Management Group (AMG). AMG was formed 12 months ago as a non-profit organisation designed to promote activities for disabled people and is based at a lodge for disabled skiers in Harrietville.
Phil, who took flight with Ted on the back of the wheelchair, said "I was a little nervous but I knew I was in good hands. It was a bit rough up there and I was nervous because it was my first time, I think the second time I'd be more relaxed." The flight lasted for about 15 minutes. "It was quite an experience.....here you are climbing. It was pretty special," said Phil who is looking forward to his second flight.
